Hangeul is both an artifact of the past, representing more than 500 years of history, and an essential living component of the present. This exhibition is designed to convey both the historical and contemporary value of Hangeul, ranging from the invention of Hangeul in 1443 (25th year of King Sejong’s reign), through its gradual dissemination to become Korea’s official script in 1894 (31st year of King Gojong’s reign), and continuing up to its critical role in Korea’s current and future development. The exhibited items are carefully selected and presented to help visitors understand the myriad uses of Hangeul in communication, education, religion, art, publication, and technology. The exhibition includes various studies and education materials on Hangeul, conducted by renowned scholars and organizations, as well as videos and sculptures that trace the long history of Hangeul, assess its place in modern times, and envision its future development. |
