This primer for teaching Chinese characters to children was compiled by Jeong Yak-yong (丁若鏞, 1762-1836), a proponent of Silhak (“practical learning”), the influential social reform movement of the late Joseon period. This edition includes annotations in English, Japanese, etc. by Ji Seok-yeong (池錫永, 1855-1935), a Korean linguist. As for ‘’ in ‘네이쥐'(Village), 'ㅇ' is attatched to the left of 'ㅂ' to transcribe the sound of 'v' which doesn't exist in Korean.
