The first Western novel to be entirely translated into Hangeul was The Pilgrim’s Progress, the famous religious allegory by English writer John Bunyan (1628-1686).
It was translated into Korean by James Scarth Gale (1863~1937) and illustrated by Kim Jun-keun(?~?), a folk painter of the late Joseon period. The people and the angels in the book are dressed in traditional Korean costume, so that the angels look like traditional Korean fairies.
